University (HBU) is co-constructed by Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hebei Province. It is one of the first-level universities participating in China’s construction plan of national first-class universities, with strong support from the Hebei Provincial Government.

HBU was originally founded as Tianjin Industrial and Commercial University in 1921. It was upgraded to a comprehensive one and received the name of Hebei University, which was relocated in 1970 from Tianjin to Baoding-a well-known historical and cultural city in Hebei Province.

The construction and development of HBU has received strong support from the Hebei Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial Government, the Ministry of Education and other national ministries and commissions. It is a key construction university of “One province, One university” in the central and western regions of the country, and also participates in the construction plan of first-class universities and world-class disciplines under strong support from the Hebei Provincial Government. In 2018, it became one co-constructed by Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hebei Province. In 2020, taking this as an opportunity, HBU has made great efforts to promote the cultural tourism industry, pharmaceutical industry and modern green industry in Hebei Province, to focus on the development of two topics of research, “Yan-Zhao Culture” and “Life Science and Green Development”, and made significant progresses in the protection and exploitation of Yan-Zhao culture, the ecological management of the Baiyangdian Lake and other fields.

Hebei University offers a comprehensive range of academic disciplines, covering 12 major specialties: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. We have a complete education system offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Currently, there are more than 28,000 registered undergraduate students and 12,400 postgraduates. We're proud of our one nationally recognized teaching team and two national-level distinguished faculty members. Hebei university offers 86 undergraduate programs, including 41 national-level first-class undergraduate programs and 5 accredited by the Ministry of Education. We have 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 18 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctor degree, 2 professional doctoral degree programs, 44 first-level disciplines authorized to offer master’s degrees, 38 professional master’s degree programs, 13 post-doctoral research mobile stations, and 1 post-doctoral scientific research workstation. Our facilities include 1 national key laboratory, 3 National Joint Engineering Laboratories, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, and 1 Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education. Eight disciplines——chemistry, materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, plant and animal science, pharmacology and toxicology, agricultural science, and environmental science and ecology ——have entered the top 1% of ESI’s world rankings. Up till now, 5 scholars of HBU have been ranked as the Most Cited Chinese Researchers by Elsevier, and 23 scholars ranked as Global Top 2% Scientists.

With an open mind, Hebei University is committed to international education. We have established cooperative ties with over 100 high-level universities worldwide, and host Hebei Province's first Sino-foreign cooperative education institution without independent legal entity: the Hebei University-University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) School of Media, Communication and Creative Industries. We also have two Sino-foreign cooperative education programs: the Hebei University-National College of Ireland Human Resource Management Program and the Hebei University-University of New Orleans Nursing (Health Management) Master's Program. We have successively hosted 3 Confucius Institutes in South America, Asia, and Africa. Hebei university has built a complete education system offering bachelor’s master’s and doctoral programs for international students. We are a pilot university designated by Training and Research Center for Overseas Study of Ministry of Education, and the first one qualified to receive Chinese government scholarships in Hebei Province. We have also been selected as an “Chinese Education Base” by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.

HBU has gone through the vicissitudes of 100 years since its establishment. Standing at a new century-old starting point, HBU adheres to the concept of “developing the university with quality, enhancing by talents, operating by characteristics, promoting by quality services, and operating according to law”, and accelerating its development along the lines of the “double first-rate” initiative. The university continuously improves its competences in talent training, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchange and cooperation. It strives to build an internationally renowned high-level comprehensive university with characteristics.
